he bear silently sidled to the cage. “What you’re here for?” he asked the squirrels. They answered, “We stole some walnuts out of his nutstock. And now he wants to make squirrel mush.” “I’ll free you! Stand back.” And the bear pulled apart the wooden spines of the cage, so that one squirrel after another could jump through. Then they ran out of the cyclops’ cave. They were in the forest again. The squirrels couldn’t thank him enough and gave him a big party as a gift.
